Jack I never said anything about the booster club.

Hiking I dont think the boosters are paying school light bills, field mowing, fertilizer, bleachers.... we as tax payers are paying far more bills for sports then is realized.

Those statistics are interesting. You should link those, instead of an article that doesn't say what you purport it to.

Brownstreak, less than 2% of college athletes go pro. And athletes are roughly 23% less likely to graduate college than other students. So what do you think happens to all these students after the schools are done with them?

Fins, you either didn't read the article or your comprehension skills are lacking. The article is an argument for paying college athletes, and refers to their fiscal situation while they are in college, not after graduation. It's not relevant in the least to the argument you are trying to make.

They play because they want to play. Both are pretty good at what they do. I could not care any less about how "good" they are. Neither will be going to college on sports ride. That's many of the kids here. However, it isn't sports that keep them out of trouble. I sound bitter? No I just provided facts. Sorry if that disappoints you. Whiney? Once again I believe academics is more important. It helps reading comprehension.

Here’s another bit of info I’m sure you aren’t aware of. 86% of college athletes end up living in poverty. Yeah... sports served them well...

Wow Skippy, the more you talk, the dumber you prove to be. Unlike you, I live in a world of facts, not warm and fuzzy feelings. I provided to you two sources backing up my statements. But you want to ignore the science (typical of backwood hayseeds like yourself) and deny the truth. Athletes are given free passes for grades, drugs, and sexual assaults. And in the end, they get no skills that will serve them in life.

ashehikingmom, soooooo why are your children playing sports?????? I believe if I felt that way, I would just pull them now! aFiclonadoS- sounds like you are slightly bitter- whats up- you got a kid that can't play sports? I hate to tell you, but you have more of a bulls eye on you if you do play sports. And jack rip her, your precious tax payers money doesn't go towards the sports program. The Booster Club pays for all the major sports needs, or at least at the high school level, so that whinning won't get you anywhere!

No one is mentioning what it is costing the tax payers for light bills, mowing and grooming fields, uniforms, buses, equipment....

Oh, and your knowledge on economics is even worse than your info on sports. College degrees will always earn people higher incomes than someone with only a high school degree with a blue collar job.

Wow, what a crock of crap! That myth about keeping students out of trouble has been so debunked, it’s embarassing for you that you repeat it. Athletes are more likely to get into trouble. But what actually happens is their infractions get covered up because they are athletes. This treatment creates godlike complexes to the point that many athletes think they can do anything. Research has found that 1/3 of sexual assaults on campuses are committed by athletes. 1/3! No, sports isn’t keeping kids out of trouble. Sports is creating a bunch of sexual predators with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. And let’s remember that CTE causes extreme personality changes and violent outbursts. Oh, let’s not forget that concussions have also been connected to ALS now too.

Really? You do know the kid in Watauga that just killed his parents was involved in sports right? Academics is more important over sports. Home life is more important over sports. Yes, I have children playing sports and no it isn't what keeps either of them out of trouble. I've seen athletes from this county in the past receive scholarships for sports. I've also seen many of those not finish after being injured and not being able to play. Their scholarships are revoked and they don't have a leg to stand on after that. So come again.

Sport activities in the school systems keep kids out of trouble! End of story!!! If they are busy with practice and games then they can't be out running the streets and selling drugs. There is absolutely nothing for the young adults to do around here, so why not promote sports? Yes, academics are very important and the School Board always seem to try their best at getting the best educators and they should, however they fail miserably in the hiring/paying of qualified coaches for Ashe County Schools. They want teachers within the system to coach. Well guess what, when teachers are forced to coach, they have no compassion for the athletes nor the game. They see kids all day long and have no desire to work with more kids every evening of the week, and I can't say that I blame them. We will never be competitive with the other school systems until they get (and pay for) good knowledgeable coaches who want to be there and are not what I call "convenient" coaches. We have a lot of potential athletes here in this county, but that is not a priority with our School Board. Some kids are not gifted enough to go on and rack up big academic scholarships, so why not highlight the gifted athlete along with them. Yes, academics are very important, but look around us, the average blue collar worker is in much more demand than a 4-6 year scholar and my guess is that the blue collar worker will shine much brighter on the field than an academic scholar, or at least a larger percent will, just my opinion but everyone has one and thank goodness for that. But sports are a very important part of the education system!

Just what more do you expect in Ashe county. You sound like a implant from the flat lands. Seems like I remember the Alleghany girls winning the state championship last year.

Why don’t you worry about the kids learning to read instead of them playing a useless game

We need a complete overhaul of girls softball. Wilkes and even alleghany teams make us look bad. No coaches . No knowledge of the sport. All politics when playing.
