I, of course, know nothing of who the people are in this discussion. You seem to be quite in the know as to the deal being done. The Superintendent says otherwise. And, I shall not be packing it in or running or selling. You may not see me on this site but I shall continue my efforts..... Truly not doing any of this to offend anyone....Just can't put my finger on why some of you care as much as you do. What are your motivations?? You attribute a lot to me but I know nothing of yours....

So the news around town is nothing more than rumors for old ladies? Just how stupid are you? I've seen Dog and Fins trashing you over the months and I can see why. You make stupid people look like NASA engineers.

Basically the local papers are nothing more than gossip reading for the blue haired little old ladies club...

And you going to depend on the local papers for this? Now that's funny!!!!
Is there a problem with that?

Byran the only thing you have said that is correct is you are done beating this dead horse. You have been told twice by Heels that the site is a done deal and I feel the same as heels. Its a done deal. You have no power on this site as you have over your followers so you are gong to pack it in and run. Your group gives you a false sense of security and power and you are not getting it on this site. That is so far.

The thing is that out of all the bad decisions that our elected officials and appointed leaders make this one is actually one in my mind that makes sense. The biggest reason is it has the infrastructure in place that the school needs... Water, Sewer, Proximity to the hospital and law enforcement facilitates and yes there are already roads in place.

I also laughingly have to admit that I need to add subscriptions to the local newspapers in Ashe to my daily New York Times..... One can know a lot about what is happening throughout the world and be unaware of what is occurring right under one's own nose!! That, thankfully, shall be remedied post haste!!

You know, pretty much every other incorporated town in America has at least one school inside their borders, and they've been able to figure out how to manage traffic and loss of tax revenue for the property. The whole idea that this is a problem for the town is absolutely reduculous. The only reason the aldermen are complaining is their egos were hurt because no one pretended their permission was needed.

Schools are good for property values, Bryan. Sell your house with the potential added value and go find you another industrial building to gaze at

My issue is not your opposition, but your lack of knowledge and claims that can not be backed up. A simple search can provide most of the facts that prove you are wrong. I understand that Jefferson is a small town, but the whole purpose of a local government is to handle challenges that might come up.

Of course, your opinion is absolutely as important as mine. I do not believe I have made any inferences otherwise. If so, I am sorry. I did say that the Superintendent had not called me back REGARDING the location of entrances to the school. ( She did, however, return that call yesterday) I Did NOT say that she and I had not EVER spoken about the site. Counting the call yesterday, we have had two conversations, one of which was about the land in Smethport. Should you wish to query her about these conversations for proof of veracity, please, feel free.

I still am at a loss as to your intense feelings of anger over this. "My opinion is just as important as yours" and my neighbors and I will be directly affected. Our "pathetic" little town does care and we shall continue our opposition. As I said, we all feel differently about the subject. Thusly, I shall not continue to "beat a dead horse" on this site. I wish you no ill will and hope for you blessings and peace.

You have failed to back up any of your claims with facts. I have lived in Jefferson, close to Jefferson, all around Ashe County. My ****g view point is just as important as your's.

Now, we have already debunked all your claims. There will be no loss of revenue, Smethport was a made up lie, traffic will increase, but you have over exaggerated the impact.

Also, you told us you got all your information directly from the superintendent.... Yet you told the Mountain Times that you had not received a call back from her. So you are making this up as you go.

Like I said, if Jefferson can not address this then they are a joke. They are making it sound as one day there will just a school appear...its in the planning stages. No need to involve anyone until it's deemed the site is suitable. Then your joke of a town can try and figure out what challenges it will have.

Oh, no fear, I still believe it. I have been tied up with another project that needed my attention. The information I referred to was given me by members of the Jefferson Aldermen at their meeting Monday. I was heartened to hear that they, too, share many of my concerns. You might check their minutes should you be so inclined. It is obvious that each of us has our own viewpoint and it would seem that neither side is convincing the other. I would ask if any of you are property owners in the town of Jefferson and would thusly be affected?? Or, are you parents with children affected by this decision? Just trying to sort out where everyone is coming from in basing their opinions.....I would suppose that all sides will sort it it out and see what occurs. It is always an interesting learning lesson to learn from others and to challenge and/or concur with their viewpoints. Wishing all a happy weekend!!

I guess Bryan doesn't really believe his own BS enough to try to keep defending it.

While tax revenue may be lost, I don't think the schools get a free ride for services such as water and sewer, at this point the farm is using little if any of those city services, while a new Middle school will.

Heels09

If you are really concerned about tax revenues then you should be for the school and the increased traffic in your town. The best way to increase tax revenue has always been growth. Although a middle school is not going to trigger a boom, there will be a significant bump in growth.

Not only that, but don't farms get a reduced rate anyways. I am not sure about the town, but I am pretty sure the county does. So the impact of taking 20-30 acres out of a 200+ farm should be minimal. If I figured correctly you are talking about less that $1000 lost in revenue.

These are not hard to figure out. Do a little research, stop making baseless arguments and show us some facts to back up your claims.

Bryan, it's been said before that with just a single school, anywhere you locate it, some kids are going to have a long ride. Watauga has been hauling kids out of the North end of Ashe for decades, taking them to Boone to high school. But you don't care about them because they aren't going to be in your neighborhood.

The whining and moaning about widening the road to handle traffic shows just what a cry baby, backwards prick you are. Things change. Progress happens. Like Heels said, if the town can't figure that out, time to dissolve the town. I don't remember you worried about tax revenue when the county wasted $1 million on that lot in front of the courthouse and took it off the tax rolls.

So, let's get this straight. The superintendent told you they own land in Smethport, but in the newspaper she said there is no land? That was during her interview when this protest group was made known. No, I don't like the price of the land. However, I'm pretty sure that no matter where they make the choice to build the price of the land will either go up or be high just because it is county money paying for it. The traffic at the intersection of 88/16 already congested? Funny I travel through there and never have been in a traffic jam. The children of this county deserve a new school. I have also observed that when the long bus ride comes up in a conversation it is always the ones in the northwestern part of the county. Newsflash we have children in Laurel Springs, Todd, Grassy Creek, Fleetwood, and so forth. I do not recall these parents arguing over the placement of the school. Yes, I realize you pay taxes even as a part time residents. I think that you still should just not worry about what happens with the school if you don't have children in the school system.
