Middle School Location Why the Secrecy?

Raise your hand if you have ever seen a traffic jam at the red light in Jefferson. Maybe on the 4th of July after the fireworks. The infrastructure is always going to be an issue, but it is better than no infrastructure, which is what we have now ant the old site. If Jefferson can't handle something as simple as the middle school then maybe they need to dissolve the town government and merge with West Jefferson. So either you are a joke of a town, or you some together and solve the issues.

So Bryan how big a crowd have you assembled to protest the boe?

The town has not been consulted and have seen no plans. They were neither approached or queried as to their thoughts. They are worried because of loss of taxable revenue which they said would result in higher taxes for town residents. They have not been advised as to where cars would enter and exit. The Board of Education has been contacted and will not divulge this information. I must also add that this thread had already begun.... I did not start the questioning of this proposed school site/secrecy.

My, what vitriol in this group. Yes, there is an infrastructure problem. The intersections of Highway 88 and Old 16 is already too crowded. No, I do not dislike children at all. Yes, schools are good things. No, I do not find Christmas trees awful, just the toxins used. Yes, a publicity guru would have been a good idea. I had no idea I was stepping into this breach ... Yes, I was told about the site by the Superintendent. I am only a citizen who cares....and has been a part of the town for over 50 years. Yes, the thoughts of the possibility of widening North Main St is upsetting, not only to me, but to most of the residents who have lived there for much of their lives. My own selfish sentimentality aside, it is not fair to have children travel so far to attend school. Why is it that a dissenting opinion appears to anger others so much? Oh,!for the record, you are falling a bit flat with your baseless innuendo.

Does the town approve of plans? Does the town build state maintained roads into the site? There will have to be a state maintained road into the site.

The word on the street is that hat Bryan hates kids. The other word on the street is he is afraid the new school year will put him in violation of the court ordered distance that he must stay away from such buildings. I haven't researched if the later has any reality to it. I think he's just a kid hater

I probably would've consulted an advertising agency or political communications guru before rolling out the "No School Here" slogan. Nuclear waste dump? Shopping center? Psychiatric institute? Landfill? Sure, but a school? Mind you, a school that will serve as a buffer between your property and a manufacturing plant, and get rid of all those evil, toxic Christmas trees you speak of?

I moved here 15 years ago and have assimilated. I did not move here to change things to what I think is right/wrong. I moved here because I liked the area.

If you are so unhappy about the school I suggest you call Allied Van Lines and haul your stuff back off the mountain.

Of course you won't get over it. You are a busy body shiner. Most people understand that having a new school in the neighborhood is good for property values. It sure is better than looking at an industrial complex. Oh wait... You already have that to look at.

Number one. They Smethport property is false information. There is a spot of land there that they wanted to build the high school but never could get support to do so. That property is owned by Thomasville or TFI now. They graded the land years ago for a Plant but never come through. There is nothing there just land and maybe some Christmas trees.

Next, you are saying that Jefferson lacks the infrastructure...how dumb are you. A move from Warrensville to Jefferson is a major upgrade in infrastructure in every aspect.

Just admit its going to be close to you and you don't like it, but don't make up crap to support your personal feelings.

Also, I was under the assumption that "the deal" is pending results from soil samples.... It will be interesting to see what damage all those chemicals from years of Christmas tree sprays has done to the land at the proposed site...

My information came from the Superintendent. I do not plan to "get over" anything at this point. The town of Jefferson was never even asked or were considered in the decision.... They worry about the lack of infrastructure and adequate roads also..... The town board has been completely bypassed in this decision. They are losing revenue and gaining the traffic mess.....

Bryan,

Let's cut to the chase. You're upset because this will possibly have a direct impact on your vacation home, likely impacting the home's value with regard to taxes and perhaps, aesthetics regarding the outer view (Nevermind it lies in sight of an industrial manufacturing facility.). Traffic may be somewhat of an issue (No one knows because you're misleading your part-time neighbors about plans, none of which have even been discussed.), but you're not a full-time resident, so you can schedule your jaunts accordingly. Fair enough.

Furthermore, you're the epitome of an absentee homeowner. I've lived here a good three years, full-time mind you, and ever since I've been here, when it comes to the schools, a new middle school has always been at the fore, it's simply been a matter of whether or not this new school would be constructed at its current site or somewhere else in the county.

You proclaimed yourself a "government watchdog" in the Post article, but you're nothing of the sort. Government watchdogs look out for the interests of all the people, you know, all taxpayers. You only look out for yourself. You became one on a whim after you'd been "asleep at the wheel," but you weren't even in the car, you were in a roadside ditch long after the car was in Hawkins County.

PS: You seem awfully concerned w/r/t how the school will "fit" in downtown Jefferson.... Where were you when the Worth House was rotting inside and out at the entrance to our lovely downtown?

PS2: You mentioned building the school by Greenfield... You realize there are people who also own homes behind that spot? Would you advocate so aggressively for those good souls too?

Get over it. The school is going on the dollar property. Stop whining and move on.

And with just one middle school, there will always be some bus ride that's long.

Where do you get your information that the county owns the old lumber yard? This should be good. Give me the PIN number of the property.

Also, the county already owns land in Smethport. They say that would not be a good site because there there was a lumber plant there. Bi did some checking and have been told that yes, there was a plant there but it was for "treated" lumber and would, therefore, pose no threat. Also, has anyone thought about all the toxins associated with Christmas trees?? The proposed site has been leased to Barr Evergreens for years (and the county will have to pay them out of their lease) and Christmas trees are being grown AND treated there as of this moment...

The idea of the use of Family Central is GREAT!!! Does anyone know about it's water and sewer situation. The superintendent says that was one of the factors in determining site. There is, of course, land available near the high school that is available which would create a school complex....They are widening 221 and could bring it on up and cut across the road at Lowe's.... That is already a developed area would not be plopped down in little Jefferson.

I agree....I was asleep at the wheel and knew nothing of it until it appeared in the paper. It is my own fault but I think people can take up the cause now. Let our voices be heard!! There is a petition going around to present to Board of Education....
