I doubt New River is the only investigation that needs to be going on in this area. I know of someone which a good investigation would probably turn up some real interesting facts concerning how someone is getting their hands on so much land in Ashe County. I would be willing to bet, and this is my opinion that someone would find one of those nice little Martha Stewart insider type deals involving someone obtaining both medicaid and a person's home through information relayed to them by a certain attorney who just happens to turn up as trustee, relays the auction details to a certain person, and that person just happens to have the winning bid. The old right hand washes the left hand deal.

Good lawd people, this type of fraud is rampant. There will be people that die, and they will die at the hands of law enforcement who don't want to deal with them so they will just shoot them. There will be more Jarad Loughner types on the streets and not getting treatment.

People who commit suicide are going to do it regardless. Unless someone is paying close attention to them, they will miss the warning signs. These folks are in extreme pain and it is the only way out for them.

That's the latest that I know on the situation. Echoing BRASH's comments, Ashe County will use $115,000 of the $170,000 appropriated for mental health services for the year, to fund New River's mid month payroll.

Interim Manager Pat Mitchell did confirm the county may be liable for some portion of a $3,000,000 loss, though the exact amount remains uncertain until investigators finish their audit, which may be some time.

People die every second from suicide what else is new. Its like education money thrown at it has done nothing. Now the money has gone down a hole.

Just a few Thoughts:

It is possible, and in my opinion most likely, that the 'fraud' is probably not someone 'stealing' money, but the result of poor paperwork/documentation and/or abandoning consumers in McDowell, Alexander and Caldwell Counties with only a two week notice rather than the 30 days required.

$3 million is not a lot if the payroll is $1.5 million every two weeks.

Losing 2 payrolls is most likely the result of poor management and an inability to review, monitor and report on agency finances.

Wanting to save jobs is virtuous, but one of the larger problems with NR could be that it was not able to be lean enough to survive within the current Mental Health system in the State. I can guarantee that no provider, including NR, will continue to employee 100% of current employees.

I don't know what the amended 160A says, but under the old one, the Counties will be on the hook for the $3 Million. And unless the Counties continue to prop up NR, there will be a complete breakdown of the service provision in these counties. Given that this can not be allowed to happen, they will have to cover the $3 Million and a lot more to try to maintain an orderly transition.

With the DHHS DMA stopping Medicaid payments, there is no organization in the State, except for the State, that can withstand providing services to consumers and paying employees without having Medicaid. It is basic: no money coming in - no money can be paid out... NR is toast .... unless the Counties prop them up. And which Counties have those kind of dollars laying around these days?

Anyway, I will end with my last, sad opinion, based upon viewing this (the failure of Mental Health providers) happening across the State: PEOPLE WILL DIE AS A DIRECT RESULT>>>, either from Suicide or by being killed by people who are not in appropriate care or who fall through the cracks of transition.

Look at this way bear, The money didn't walk out the door, nor was it eaten by crazy people. Someone or ones stole 3 million smackers.

I love it! You have someone guilty of embezzlement before any concrete facts are presented. Who knows, maybe someone left the seat up, instead? Falling that extra distance onto the porcelain can be a real bother, and could also be the cause for investigation. There's as much proof for my scenario as that which you people have presented. I've got a suggestion; just wait until the facts become clear and then gossip.

I read over on go blue ridge that alligations had been made I bet before it is over some buddy is in trouble for embezzlement.

You might have to drive a little JOe. It might still be cheaper than the 3 million we all will share in.

I wonder what kind of hassel this is going to cause those of us with CCW permits when it is time to renew
