The YMCA is a money grubbing organization just like the American Red Cross and the United Way.
They have out lived their purpose - to keep the black kids out of the rich white kids swimming pools.
I've said it before - Ashe County will not see a YMCA.

I have never seen a need for a Y in Ashe, and never will see a need for it..

What does that have to do with the price of rice in China? It doesn't matter what regional Y controls them. The way they operate is still the same.
AB, probably not one thing. Some might think the county can save by getting rid of the family center in the old Ashe Central location. But what so many people have failed to figure out, the YMCA is expensive to join. Far from cheap. Most in the area won't be able to afford it, or would never spend that much any way.

Winston Salem controls the Y in Wilkes. Charlotte runs the camping facility in Boomer. Both ventures of the Y family in those 2 areas.

It would become another money vacuum like Ashe park. Not to mention the nightmare of bringing that building up to code. You just cant do that the way we have let codes get out of reach.

And what will the YMCA offer that is not already being offered by other agencies or private sector businesses in Ashe County?

The county is going to get stuck holding a big bill if they let a ymca in. Folks, watauga doesn't have the numbers to support a ymca. And for ymca to go into a "rural" area like Boone or west Jefferson, they get the local government to chip in part of the cost. Usually the property. Then, when the ymca decides they can't survive, they up and leave and leave the county holding this expensive facility to do something with.
