I always wondered why Howell didn’t handle his neighbor differently. Barneys love to tell us they take the job to serve the people. Someone that really means this, if they moved in across from a person that’s blind, deaf, likes to drink a little, and randomly fire guns in the air, would go over to get to know the neighbor and be friendly. Then when the shooting starts up, they’d know how to call the neighbor or walk across the road and check on him, distract him and get him occupied with something else, or take a case of beer over and help him get to the point he passes out and is no longer a threat to the tree leaves. Or if he couldn’t get along with the neighbor, make a point to tell the approaching officers about disabilities and state of mind that could affect how to approach the subject. I’ve said before there is a serious problem with local law enforcement pretending they are LAPD SWAT fast roping through windows and kicking in doors in the middle of gang territory. But this isn’t South Central. We need more Andy’s and less Barneys. We need more people with badges concerned that Emma Brand gets her medication or is willing to drive Emma Watson to the grocery store (foot note: both characters were played by the same actress). And this especially rings true with the high sheriff who’s job description is an administrator, not a LEO. Diplomacy needs to be his go to weapon in his bat belt.

Contrary to what some on here think, I wasn’t a Williams fan. He was just the best choice on the ballot the last couple elections. And, given county resources and our nation’s constitution, crime was handled about as well as a logical person could expect. I still stand by my very well expressed opinions that ever agreeing to be part of that TV show was beyond stupid. It was a black eye to the county. But, on the few occasions that James made an appearance on the show, he understood diplomacy and respect. He was always friendly and spoke to suspects when they were being booked. He realized it did no good to be a jerk to them or flex his power just to show off.

He was a highly contributing factor to the pay out of the lawsuit of almost 400 thousand paid out by the county.

I have always wondered why Phil Howell was not prosecuted. When he called the dispatcher, and when the other deputies were responding to the scene, not once did he advise anyone they were dealing with a blind and deaf person. That situation could have and should have been handled differently. A man is dead because of his incompetence. Phil Howell should not be a deputy, a sheriff, or even be allowed to own a gun. Him wanting to run for Sheriff must be a joke.

He has the qualification to be officer never said he did not but he done cost the county $200,000 and he was in charge. Imagine how much he can cost us if he is calling the shots.

Heard that Phil Howell is running for sheriff. That's just what we need to help fix burfurts mess? He caused the first guy to get shot by Hoppy and was sued for it. Remember the $200,000 that the county paid out. He call Hoppy out because his blind and deaf neighbor was suppose to be shooting guns. Why didn't he go something about it? Instead he called Hoppy out to cut his lights and siren to sneak up and shoot his neighbor. Read the law suit, it tells it all. I understand he runs dispatch and isn't even a real deputy just a want to be. Before he came to the sheriff's office, he was a park worker in Raleigh changing toilet paper and feeding squirrels. Also understand he will put Grady Price back in and remember Grady helped burfurt try and set up a deputy to get fired under James Williams. Price was a burfurt lacky till they had a disagreement and he was let go. Think about it people not Howell for 2018
