Oh really well the original poster must have had their panties in a bunch to even start the post. No I’m not here to cheer Heels on. We just see things eye to eye on this. One poster even complained that BRES got new furniture. When I replied Westwood did too nothing was replied. Most parents do back the children and help them strive. Granted there are many who don’t. Go to the PTO meetings. Go to the BOE meeting. Stop fussing about these things on a website. Voice it to the powers who be. Call Raleigh if you want. However, when facts are brought don’t find a new issue.

I have never seen two people get their tail feathers ruffled quiet like Heels and Hiking! Heels seems to know a lot of information and can quickly access it so he must have an inside source feeding it to him and he's just a talking head. Hiking is a hoot as they seem to just be here to Amen and support Heels. I'm sure anyone could get this information with some research but the facts remain Ashe County Schools is on the decline! Stresssing teachers out and causing undo chores such as crunching numbers and making pretty websites is not going to get the job done! It is obvious that there is division among the employees. I think it's time for everyone to get busy including students and parents to help make the students future and our county the best it can be! And Heels, you need to quit jumping so quick to defend and I've given up on the fact that you are the son and I'm beginning to think you are the one and only Superintendent Phyllis Yates herself! The central office needs to support teachers and not be their boss. It's my understanding that about half of the workers there have never taught, taught primary grades or a special classes, or taught very few years. It's no wonder the system is failing because the role models have little experience and litlle respect! And finally, why in the world would anyone say it's okay to keep giving BRES more and more resources and think it's fine to shortcut the other two schools because they are doing okay without them??? Every child in our county deserves the same amount of funds and resources dedicated to their education! Imagine, what MVES and WWES would be able to do if they had the same opportunities? I think all the teachers should call in sick one day and let some of the ones that are so quick to give them orders come out and try it on for size! Haha!

Look, we have to stop fighting among ourselves and focus on what we need to do to help our students and school system improve. ACS has dropped over the past two years is state ranking from 15th to 21st.

Again point proven. If MVE has higher test scores they need less help with their students.

Reduced lunch is the same price at all three elementary schools and that’s 40 cents.

Heels09

Just stop. You are making up your own numbers as you go. Even your Free and reduce lunches is wrong. In 2016 70% of Blue Ridge, 68% of MT View, 60% of Westwood.

Ashe County Schools Director of Accountability Phil Howell said Tuesday the district ranks 21st overall, among the top 18 percent of the state’s 115 school districts.

“We’ve made some gains in places, but that’s in line with where we’ve been in previous years,” Howell said.

2015-2016 School Performance Grades

Mountain View Elementary: B

Westwood Elementary School: B

Ashe County High School: C

Blue Ridge Elementary: C

Ashe County Middle School: C

Those letter grades were assigned to each school based on its “performance grade score.” On that scale, Mountain View scored the highest at 72, followed by Westwood at 70, Ashe County High at 69, Blue Ridge at 67 and Ashe County Middle at 65.

Blue Ridge's free and reduced lunch is less than MVES. This means MVES has more kids in poverty. So mves are the lowest. They are always close to the top if not on the top. Blue Rige had an extra literacy teacher for years, so hiker, they have had more for years. Again, blue ridge is not the lowest, MVES is and they have great scores. MVES always does more with less!

So the NC Department of Education has nothing to do with maki g rules for each county? Then why do we pay them?

Did I say that The Early Learning Center was the only place with slots? No I did not. I am well aware that almost every day care is given slots., but the majority are issued to The Early Learning Center. The PreK board votes on those for each center. The slots are based on the state budget. Hence, the reason third slots aren’t announced until after Raleigh’s fiscal year ends. I did not once say grants only, but they are there to be applied for.

All the extra demands are district, not from Raleigh. Go hiking. Good try. Again, you have no idea. Compare our demands with those in other countries. These additions have nothing to do with Raleigh. Pre K funds are state and federal and there are slots all over this county. It is not ran just through the Early Learnjng Center. They are just a place that receives funds. All funds are run through BOE. There are slots at Ashe Day, Learning Thru Play, and other day cares. Very little from grants. You certainly know very little to know so much.

Also, with Blue Ridge having the lowest test scores of the three elementary schools I would think that they would need more help.

Have you ever thought her demands come from Raleigh making more demands?

Thank you Heels09 for the summary of events. How do you know when her contract is up? Are you one of her employees at the BOE or her son, because teachers do not know this. The paper said that she was interim and then she said she would stay till she retired.

You want the facts, but the facts are that Jerry Baker is 12 months and the other APs are 11 months. It has nothing to do with the salary scale or all that other misguided information that your wrote. He is paid his salary for 12 months and the others are 11 months, thus another months pay period. The fact is that Blue Ridge has extra. That is it. Callie has more help than the others when the high school needs a 12 month AP.

You are right about her position, the BOE did put her in and that is essentially their job, "to hire the superintendent." They can put Charlie Brown in there if they want to. You do not have to have a Masters or a Dr. in front of you name, but 95 percent of systems do and require that from their superintendents or at least knowledge of curriculum and educational processes, which I must say you have. But without this degree, and since she has not been a teacher, she would get more respect if she would let teachers focus on teaching our kids, rather than micro-managing their every move. She is the only superintendent that has asked to look at lesson plans and that is insulting to the teachers and to the principals. They can do the job, and do not need her examining them since she has never written one in her career. There has never been a superintendent that has been loved, it is not a loved position.

It is hard to be evaluated as a teacher or a principal or a director, when she has never been an educator. I did hear that she has never been trained on the evaluations for anyone that she evaluates and makes up the criteria in which she evaluates. She also gets along well with the central office as they do not have to be evaluated, only teachers and principals. It is a very divided organization right now. She has to keep her CO happy now, so that is where she focuses. So, please ask her to get some training on both of these and this would make the teachers happier.

While many do not like a superintendent, they at least knew they had walked a mile in their shoes. So, this has been a learning curve for all staff in the county.

People feel safe and I have to say that this website works. After the talk of furniture, I heard that MVES is getting new furniture and WWES got some new furniture, so it does work. But some of the information is rumors and not valid.

All BOE members have an agenda, some more than others, but one has more power than others is not fair, and no one should be in this position for power.

Heels09, we just want fairness, and not favorites. There has been some actual facts and you have tried to defend, but the truth is that Mrs. Yates needs to lay off teachers and know that they love their jobs., They also love their families more and they are overwhelmed with her demands. It is hard to take this when she gives her daughter extra help and teachers just get more demands put on them. I do think we dropped last year with our scores, so you are right our school system does can improve. However, we have been the top for years and years and will continue to be because of great teachers. Mrs. Yates has acted as if we were broken and we were not, and she has had the power to change things for years, and I do believe that this power has gone to her head.

Mrs. Yates has not been happy being 2nd in command and has said many negative comments about Dr. Reeves, Mr. Johnson, Dr. Holden, Mr. Walker and Mr. Jackson. She needs to stop trying to win a popularity contest and just be supportive of all staff, not just the CO staff. Teachers want to be appreciated and this makes it better for our students and parents. There is an undo amount of stress over the last two years and lots of things that are not followed through with by the CO. She needs to focus on them and not the teachers, who are doing their job.

Heels09

Posted 6:48 am, 09/29/2017

The facts are this.

First is was Mrs. Yates does not have a Doctoral degree so she was not qualified. The state requirements are clear the the superintendent does not have to have one and on top of that the school board submits the candidates credentials to the state to be certified before they are hired. If they don't qualify the county can not hire them.

Then it was all because she had no teaching experience. Which is not a requirement. The requirement is that she manage the school system and report to the school board. Her staff was recognized as one of the best financially run systems in the state. Her scores are at or above state averages. No proof that she is not fulfilling those duties except for the claim that she falls asleep at meetings and she is putting demands on teachers they don't like.

Then is was she showed favoritism towards Blue Ridge because of her daughter all because they were able to buy new furniture. No other proof was ever provided except that they had new furniture.

Then it was Mr. Baker had a 12 month contract an no one else did. Yet you had no idea what that even meant. It is a pay schedule. We all proved you wrong over that. Not only that the state post the guidelines for salaries for all administrators. Those salaries are set by education and experience. Now a county could supplement salaries but the county does not supplement salaries except for the Superintendent.

Then it was Dr. Beckworth was running the show, No wait, Terry has all the power because his wife runs a daycare. The Pre-K program is administered by the state and has very strict guidelines on how its run. As a matter of fact they get audited very often and there is no evidence of anything but an adequately run daycare. As a matter of fact they have one Pre-K class, they pay rent to the county, and they provide a good service. Debbie being his wife is irrelevant. Now Terry's daughter is another story.

She approved a new Truck for the head of maintenance. Poor teachers have to drive to training why don't they get a vehicle. This didn't even deserve a response but you obviously couldn't understand that a few of us were making fun of you. To be honest, I don't know if he did or didn't. I do know that complaining that teachers have to drive to training as an excuse is laughable. I will give you this, if he abuses this privilege then there is a big problem but I have no issue with him getting a vehicle to perform his duties as required.

If you come to me and say that you have solutions on how to improve the school system then I am all open to listen to you. Because there are tons of things that can and should be changed. We should not accept adequate test scores and graduation rates as the best we can do. However, by making up issues that really are not issues because Mrs. Yates stepped on your toes at some point is not a reason to cause a stir. As a matter of fact, you could not even comprehend the fact I said she was not as easy to talk to as Dr. Holden. It had noting to do with access to her, it had to do with the fact that her personality is different.

And last, She was appointed by the school board, certified by the state. Its her Job, You can't change that. Her contract is up next year, She might get an extension or she might retire, who knows. I do know this, unless you and I are on the school board, we have absolutely no say in who they choose. If we feel they are failing, then we have the power to vote them out, but unless you can come up with true facts that prove there is corruption like we see in the commissioners and sheriff, then your argument is falling on deaf ears.

Really.....Kenneth Richardson does a great job for the school system. I don't care if he got a new truck. Sounds more and more like a bitter teacher that thinks they get nothing but work so hard.

Hikingmom and Heels you all need to join the post about the tax payers paying for the county commissioners cars as you two are clueless! The pre-k directors husband probably bought his truck with his income from his job just as the commissioner did. However, if a school employee was given a new truck to drive for work, they may as well have given him a new truck and the tax payers paying for it. They drive them daily, take them home, drive them on the weekends, and fill up with gas as the schools system gas pump. I do not agree with school employees such as the superintendent, principals, and directors such as Kenneth Richardson driving around in vehicles and gas bought and paid for by the tax payers. They can drive their own personal vehicles back and forth to work like everyone else. Teachers, assistants, and bus drivers drive their own personal vehicles and if they go to trainings that are a significant distance away, they drive their own or are given some run down and older model car to drive- they certainly are not given the new truck or the super's SUV.
