Read for Understanding

A recent Washington Post article brings out the concern of cognitive neuroscientists that online reading is changing the brain and making it difficult to read for comprehension. One typical person interviewed says she clicks on posted links, "reads a few sentences, looks for exciting words, and then grows restless, scampering off to the next page . . ." The same individual says she "sometimes scans novels while she's reading, looking for keywords and missing what's being written." The Apostle Paul provided guidance to Timothy on reading for understanding in 2 Timothy 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Paul tells the Christ follower to spend time in Scripture. Slow down, absorb each word, read for comprehension, not speed. Word count or chapter count is not as important as studying for understanding and application. Just a Thought 4/11/14
