School board requires community service to graduate

Why is it that it seems that the Ashe County school system wants to focus on every available option except actually educating the kids?

Dog and Fins, while I respect your opinions and vies on this subject, I do believe that having the students participate in community service as a graduation requirement is a valuable learning experience. I'm unable to quote statistics supporting my position, I just have a gut feeling and personnel opinion that exposing students to community service, assisting others for no compensation other than the satisfaction received from helping someone else. Not everyone feels the same way I do. I except that, again I feel our community would be a better place to live in if our citizens are exposed to the idea that helping someone else is not ab ad thing.

Really old news, the community service requirement has been in place for at least the last 10 years. I think it is a de-minimis amount and should be at least 30 hours per year. I also think the school could do a lot more to assist the students in identifying suitable community service for this requirement.

I don't think cutting the grass for your grandmother is suitable community service, now if you cut the grass for some old or ill or disables folks through a program coordinated by DSS or a church or some other suitable organization I'd be all for it.

There are plenty of community service opportunities available for kids today to learn how to give back.

My kids all completed their requirements the summer before Freshman year, and by graduation have complied over 400 hours each in documented community service.

This being the case, we should keep an eye on some administrators lawns/gardens for high school labor abuse.

This has been a requirement for a long time.

Try to spin it all you want. It's still service forced by a government authority. Same thing however you slice it

It is totally different!

I removed a few posts that were off topic and/or trolling.

Blanch how is it that you think they aren't being forced to do the service? They either do it or they dont graduate. The common crook either does it or go to jail. There is no difference.

Blanch Darlin', crimes are committed, then they may commented about. But crimes themselves are not commented.

Same work. And they are being forced to do it.

Not a difference. But I expect you to try to defend it. That's your job

This is different! Students are not commenting crimes to do this service work. Actually it also gives them a chance to help others. It could keep them out of trouble so they won't have to do the real community service work that jail people are required to do.

Actually, yes it is. Jail people could sign up for science camp if they know science, and aren't sex offenders. I believe it was Christian Laetrner that ran basketball camps during half time of the ACC all star games to work off the required time for his DUI conviction.

Blanch have you requested students to help you with the bus routes as their service?

I don't care what you want to call it the school calls it community service and I think it is BS to require it to be able to graduate.

I am surprised that you didn't know this...I don't want to call it community service but, every student has to have 30 hours. For example one student stayed after school and helped other students in science. I think it was called " Science Camp". For the past 2 years this has took place that I know of, it could be more. It is not like community service that jail people do.

My question is, do they get credit for work they do if a judge has already ordered them to do community service? Or do those kids get a double load?

That's my question dog what is the purpose of it and how does it contribute to the kids education.

What will they learn from this? How to do community service when they are arrested and sentenced to do community service?

I just found out that the Ashe county school board requires kids in high school to complete 30 hours of community service before they can graduate. What is everyone's thought about this?
