secretagent why don't you ask a few of these drop out students why they drop out? The answer won't be their parents. Go ahead and ask a few and come back on here and tell us!!

Onlyin, the high drop out rate is pure and simple a parental problem. The kid doesn't care, the parent(s) don't either, and the kid is allowed to drop out. Once of age, the school system can't make them stay. I'll also add that losers tend to breed more losers and the beat goes on. You can't hang the high drop out rate on the school system, the BOE, or the Mouth Breathers.

I'll point to the various discussions about transportation policy, attendance policy, high dropout low graduation rates, and many other rant threads going on about the schools. The Board of Education is the body which empowers and upholds the the administration in each or our schools. When you criticize the schools administration you should be thinking about who has allowed this behavior and activity to occur in the first place?

OCM, where does it say that the education department pays for the students supplies? I always thought that the Ticonderoga pencils and Big Chief tablets were the responsibility of the parents. If you really want to talk about education funding take a trip over to Raleigh and check out the Taj Mahal they built for the administrators. It even has hardwood from South America incorporated into its construction. Also take a count of all the administrators that work an 8 hour day and then determine why the teachers can't seem to find a few bucks for a raise.

What are they doing that is wrong or stupid?

Are they driving away development? Are they pennywise and pound foolish?

Other than not being able to get enough money from the County Commissioners to pay for teacher's supplies and school supplies for the poor kids.

Other than the looming decisions related to Ashe Middle School what is there? Most policy decisions on a BOE relate to new school locations, bussing routes, and what to do with the teachers and staff that are having sex with other teachers and staff and or Resource Officers on school time.

School locations decision happen once or twice a generation. The NCDOT and housing patterns control most bussing decisions, and nothing seems to stop illicit hanky panky.

Now there, folks, is someone who has been paying attention here. And a gold star goes by your name.

I believe that very little has ever been said here about the school board and how they have performed. There have been a few things that they have done that has been criticized, but over all, nothing to throw them out over. For now, the commissioners are a bigger problem and more important of a fight. Then, we can deal with the BOE

And we are surprised that you are surprised. None of us should be surprised at anything anymore.

It appears that everyone feels that the current School Board is doing an adequate job providing transportation, food and an education to our young folks. No one has filed to run against the incumbents now making up 60% of the BOE.

I'm a little surprised with the multitude of rants from this group that these folks are running unopposed.
