Its highly doubtful the current sheriff would be sheriff without someone having posted photos of the previous adminstration.
If I were to place a bet, im betting that new things will pop up during the next election about the current administration...

Half the county turned out to go watch that plane take off. Don't know where some rumor that it was stolen would have come from.

I am pretty sure it was auctioned off, in fact I seem to recall it was a big deal whether the runway was long enough for it to even take off once it was sold. Course that was a long time ago and I am only half remembering hearsay since I didn't have any direct involvement one way or the other.
I do remember hearing scuttlebutt regarding who was the money behind the cocaine but I can't remember if he was ever charged for it. Same guy tried to pay off a hitman in Virginia to kill a wealthy farmer later on figuring he might be able to marry the widow for the money. Last I heard he was rotting in the prison in VA.

I knew all of those involved with the airplane with the exception of the pilot. It was a DC 6. Sheriff disabled the plane to keep it from leaving. When the case was settled, the plane was repaired and fueled with enough fuel to go to Winston Salem. Runway at Ashe was too short for any more weight.
The fuel truck coming from Wilkes is what got the plane caught. The truck was late. Unbeknownst to the LEO's they met the pot as the went to investigate. It left the airport on U Haul trucks. I think that all but one of the people involved are deceased now. Everyone but the pilot was from Wilkes
Plane and pilot were caught twice more, last time in VA and the judge ordered it destroyed. It had been in Wilkes and Ashe before it got caught. Too close to residential area in Wilkes to fly it in often.
I had nothing to do with the deal, but had done business with a couple of them when I had a car lot in Wilkes. One of them had worked for me back in the 1960's,

I had heard that the guy that was arrested was bailed out on cash �'�. I had also heard that the plane was stolen from the Ashe County airport,and was later caught in another drug bust.It was an interesting read,thanks for the response.

The what was it DC-8 I think was eventually sold at auction. If I remember correctly it ended up being caught up in another drug smuggling bust in a different place later on.

Years ago in Ashe county was there something about an airplane and it was supposedly loade with drugs? The person flying the plane was arrested and then bailed out with cash.What happened to the airplane??
