He went to Watauga because a K9 position opened up. He wanted to work in his county.

If you live in Chicago or New York all you have to do is take a trip to Virginia or Georgia to get yourself gun, gun control has to be nationwide to be effective. And as to what goes on south of the border well that's due to systemic corruption which allows the drug cartels to have guns or whatever they want. So why don't you stop with your spurious arguments and just admit you want to keep your toys no matter how many people die in mass shootings. But just keep in mind the blood of those people who died in the mass shootings many of which were small children is on the hands of the likes of you just as much as it is on the actual shooters.

Yes. Correct. He was from Boone but liked Ashe. It was not inexperience, it was lack of openings that resulted in him seeking employment in Ashe. But he left because of ....

Anyway, strict gun laws work?. Oh Yes Henry. Chicago has zero murders. Mexico and all the South of the border countries have banned guns... zero murders and the border crossers are just here vacating. Nice

Maybe someone can explain this to me: why is it that countries that have strict gun control laws have far less incidences of mass shootings than the USA, could it be that the "tools" for mass killings are much more difficult difficult to acquire? Why is it the coucks who have a penchant for mass murder in those countries aren't running around to the pharmacies and hardware stores to get the ingredients for toxins and explosives to carry out mass killings?

Come on guys quit with the spurious arguments and 'fess up you want to keep your toys, your precious phallic symbols your arguments alone prove that you're not responsible enough top own lethal weapons!

Ripmyfriend, I am sorry for your loss. You are speaking the truth about Ashe County and I see you have already been attacked for your opinions. You dared to attack the good old Ashe County buddy system. All lives matter and you are right guns aren't the problem, people ignoring whats actually going on is the problem.I remember Logan coming out here when people were harassing my mother who had dementia, and his statement "people should leave others alone if they are minding their own business. He will be missed I'm sure. None of us know if we are going to see another day and people should think before tearing others down. Unfortunately humans being the animals they are its not going to happen. Once again my deepest condolences on the loss of your friend.

You're friend was from Watauga. The only reason he worked at Ashe at all was because he was too inexperienced to get hired at Watauga. He wanted to work in Watauga when he could get the chance.

Now, that said, it's looking like the Watauga sheriff and his people really screwed up this situation. They sent uniformed officers and without protective gear to do a welfare check where they knew the individual was a paranoid schizophrenic that had already made homicidal and was known to be well armed. He should have been put into custody for observation earlier in the week but the sheriffs department gave up looking for him when he was hiding.

Guns are not the problem.. Guns are just another tool used by those wishing to harm someone. Guns could be removed completely from society & you can continue to have mass killings ... that is until the hearts of those troubled are changed.

What do I mean? You still have vehicles capable of killing. Maybe even knives?.. If not, You still have tropical castor bean plants sold in Lowes & Walmart dont you? The beans of those plants can be used to make riacin... One of the worlds most deadly toxins..

You still have rat poison sold which becomes a deadly gas mixed with bleach... You still have stump remover sold (KN03, Potassium Nitrate) when mixed with charcoal and sulfur makes black powder...

Match heads can be used as a High explosive. iodine & ammonia can produce tri-iodine, another high explosive... even urine can be used to make high explosives... I can go on all day talking about the things which could be used to harm people...

Again, guns are used... But its not the most deadly thing or tool which can be used improperly.. to kill.

This is nothing new and all these things are not "secret".. Or, I would not have posted it. These things might not fall in the scope of the 2nd Amendment per se but it falls under the 1st amendment, which, is like Christianity.. & the right to speech and right to defend ....Maybe thst is why it too should be abolished according to those on the left...

But right or left is not the issue... It is the right to live in a free society.. Freedom to choose that makes up America... The right to do right, while knowing whats bad... wrong. The freedom to choose... That is what is great. Anyways,

I am just saying that "guns" are not the issue. It is the hearts of those carrying out these bad deeds that need to be repaired.

As I said, Had my friend not have been pushed out of Ashe, he would still be (alive) and working in Ashe... ALIVE. But now that he is no longer with us. It is ashame that he left Ashe and went to Watauga..& was killed. ...I am heartbroken!

Of course our local dept. will speak highly of him after the fact.... and pretend that they cared..... But truth is, if the local dept cared.. He would still be working in Ashe.

He would still be alive.... and who knows, maybe those in Watauga.. would have handled things different and that family would still be alive..

I do not know.

I simply wished that our local & "genuine'" pill would think more of others - than acting in a political manner... Stop reading books to children in order to get on the parents good side, to get votes.

Personally I dont like "being played" ...& now, I pray that my friend is resting in peace.. a good man who left as a result of NOT being treated well in Ashe.. I can only pray that God has some mercy on those in charge here in Ashe.

Its a disgrace to Ashe.. Maybe before the next election.. People, OR A GOOD REPORTER should interview all those that worked under this admin (but left for various reasons) to get a better understanding of who & how its ran... Nothing political but merely to gather some.insight?

This post is not about politics. It is about a friend that lost their life. I just feel that we should always look deep into something in order to find solutions. Everything is a chain reaction and is as strong as its weakest link. Hopefully something good will come from the loss of a loved one & not just used to attack and name calling..

Regardless, I hope my friend will rest in peace and I pray that justice is served equally beyond this life.. Some things cannot be replaced by words, politics or political speech. We have to look deeper to find the truth...

Henrii exactly. Some people have no business with guns. I have neighbors like that without the commonsense God gave an alley cat. One shot over my daughter and my head one day when we were reading in the backyard. When I went to the sheriffs office the deputy asked me if he meant to. I told him he was standing in the road in full view laughing with his buddies. Had my daughter or I stood up he would have killed us. I made it clear any more stunts like that and I would fix the problem and they could bring the bodybags. If I am not bothering someone I expect to be left alone. Thos was some more of the Ashe County court negligence that did not stop the problem when it started. If what I have read answers to some questions are needed. It won't bring those two deputies back but it might prevent the next. Thank you for a conversation that didn't turn into a personal attack.

Green, I'm just saying keep the guns out of reach of the wrong people, if you come at me with a knife, a baseball bat or any close contact weapon even if I am unarmed I have a chance to defend myself. If you shoot me you can be a good distance away and I have no chance whatsoever other than you not getting a fatal hit.

I have only two guns in my possession that were made solely to kill humans, a revolver which I keep on hand for home defense and a nostalgic WWII relic. All my other guns are primarily for hunting or target shooting. Knowing that many of the gun owners in this county alone (some of which I am personally acquainted) have in their possession fully automatic large capacity magazine assault rifles makes me very uneasy. Many of the local rednecks who are so proud to possess these very lethal weapons will tell you that their granpaw taught them how to shoot when they were small boys and paw first took "em hunting when they 10 or 11. To be safe and/or effective with any military firearm you need to be trained by experts and many of the granpaws and paws did not serve in the military so they aint experts.

I have yet to ser any gun jump off the wall and attack anyone. It is tragic these officers died. I was just reading yesterday on WBTV that the shooter in this case went afyer his father with a knife and they had gone to the magistrate for help getting something done. Makes me question the whole thing. But you can count on the gun control fanstics to play this incident up for all its worth.

Henryii, Having been a victim of the local politics, croonie buddy system I agree with you. I have always said in Ashe County its not what you know its who. I had to wonder when the shooting occured at the camper on 221 had that person been a big shot or outsider they wanted to move here what woukd have happened??Instead he was living in an old campers and they riddled the thing and him with bullets. I've lived around guns my whole life, handled them, shot them.

Here's my take on the whole thing Green: For the most part NW NC counties and municipalities are policed by incompetents due to two main factors local politics and lack of training. Thirty hours of tuition at a community college does not a policeman make therefore their incompetence and/or politics compel them to to be other than transparent. To some extent this situation is forced upon local authorities through lack of funds. For the most part this portion of the state is controlled by Republicans and when it comes to raising taxes for law enforcement or any other essential service, well as soon as that is suggested you hear them squealing like stuck pigs. Even though at a national level repub's are accusing the dem's of wanting to defund police dept's when what they actually want is that the funds are apportioned within the dept's more effectively.

As to gun control I am a gun owner and have no problem with it, GUN CONTROL does not mean gun confiscation! Unfortunately there are too many people in this county alone that should never be allowed within a hundred yards of a gun. I personally know of two people that have concealed carry permits that are mentally unstable.

My point henryii is this. There are many unanswered questions about the handling of this sitation. Gun control or the government controlling guns isn't the answer. Guns in themselves don't kill people. Set one loaded in a room lock the room and walk away. That gun will sit right there and never kill anyone. In the wrong hands they are a problem but who gets to decide? Do I personally think mistakes were made, yes, but people need to understand these people were human and made mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, I do and you do. Its a shame those mistakes occassionally cost lives. Those officers had a job to do and unfortunated it cost their lives. Its sad, it hurts, but facts are gonna continue to come out.

This thread has gone haywire. First it's "no gun control the government doesn't need to protect us," then it's "the sheriff's dept. could have prevented the tragedy." Hello out there: the sheriff's dept. is a branch of government.

From what I have been reading the family of the shooter is saying they tried to get him help over the weekend. Law enforcement had warnings that he was planning something ,,Now I don't know how true that is but officials also stated that warnings to law enforcement was given to watch out for the shooter. My question is if those officers were prperly warned before they went to that house. The results could have beeen so different had that been the case. I hope the families can reach some closure but I don't think all the facts are in yet. I knew one of the officers as he had responded here when my parents were being harassed. He was courteous and sincere in his wish to help. RIP.
