ASU police, Boone police, and what one from Jefferson? Oh I left out Watauga and the johnny troopers.

Well, the Wilkes bomb squad and Watauga SRT made sense being that there were reports of possible explosives. And I believe that meant the SBI has to show up. But I don't understand at all what Alleghany was there for with their armored Humvee. Were they going to drive through the camper?

At first glance I have to say one word that comes to mind "overkill". My mind can change mind you.

The results of the investigation have not been released. I'm assuming the shooter provided the information about explosives.

Were any explosives found in the camper and were did they get the info that he had them?

As a tax payer and someone that lives in the community that this took place in I'm glad they were better safe than sorry. It could have been a lot worse. The first officers were doing a welfare check per the daughter's request. They were fired upon. So were they just supposed to let it all go abs say sorry Baldwin community you are on your own? Really?

The thing that stands out for me is the number of taxpayer supported individuals involved with some of the best pay, benefits, and retirement plans around. It reminds me of all the gawkers that arrived at the unfortunate propane explosion, with no fire, somewhat recently. Untold expense to taxpayers so all of them could go witness for themselves. Tax paid gawking.

All of these for one crazy shooter holed up in an old camper with no reports of gunfire until the law showed up?

"Local and state agencies from all around joined together during the standoff that resulted in multiple shots during the entire saga. The Ashe County Sheriff's Office, West Jefferson Police Department, Jefferson Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation, Watauga County Sheriff's Office, Boone Police Department, Alleghany County Sheriff's Office, Wilkes County Sheriff's Office & the Appalachian State University Police Department came together to pool resources for the situation.

Ashe Medics, West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept., Fleetwood Volunteer Fire Dept., Warrensville Volunteer Fire Dept. and Watauga EMS were also on scene for assistance as needed."

Turn off the electricity and water, go away, station a few sharpshooters, and wait. Maybe some motion sensors and night vision. If killing the individual is the goal, mission accomplished. Suicide or surrender, accomplished, but possibly a letdown.

I know and used to be one of the hunters that would pay and sit for hours in miserable conditions to wait for a turkey or deer to appear.

So possibly contract out the dangerous and dirty jobs as typical these days with a lottery and a bounty. There are some real shooters at the gun range.

After narrowly escaping from military and industry watching efficiency and profits decimating careers, I have some issues with ever-expanding inefficient government and higher education. The only government downsizing I've ever experienced was post-Vietnam career soldiers and some volunteers since.

Pardon the somewhat facetious rant. My property tax payments are still somewhat fresh memories and it's tax time again.

The duty of the sheriff would to be the commander of the operation. He would not be on the "front line". Just like the military you would not see the higher up commanders fighting in the battle on the front lines. They are there to figure out strategies for those fighting the battle.

Not being critical of your post Fins, some other posters appeared to be slamming the Sheriff for not being on the front lines leading the troops as if it were the Civil War.

That's my point with the photo. It looks like the sheriff was somewhere in a location established as a command center, in charge of the situation as he was supposed to be.

IF, and that is a big if, this incident was being managed in line with the Federal incident command system, The Ashe County Sheriff was more than likely the Incident Commander, as such he would not be on the front line, he would be in a reasonably safe location coordinating the activities of the responding agencies. If and when the IC role was passed to another person the initial IC might have been reassigned to other duties in the command center or moved to a response role at the scene.

It would be interesting to request and read the Hot Wash and after incident reports of this event.

Did you also notice the look on the SBI agent behind Phil's right shoulder? He looks like a monkey trying to understand algebra.

It's a wonder that floor didn't buckle. A lil physical fitness couldn't hurt.

Well, I am going to point out that the Ashe post article shows a photo of Phil at table surrounded by officers of all the agencies and him clearly running the show.

Pretty sure the Sheriff goes by 100 on the radio. Everybody who listened to the scanner last night heard him RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of this thing and he sounded winded and out of breath several times and I heard him whispering like he was really close to whatever was happening.

Most deputies that ever worked with him leading up to his election will say that he was undependable when they needed him in situations like this. (Maybe that is why no local deputy wanted to be his Chief Deputy.) I voted for him because he was (imho) the only one running, worth voting for at the time.

When I heard that he wasn't in the immediate area last night. I must say, it didn't surprise me. I didn't say that I disagreed with anything he done last night.. so, get off your high horse and have a nice day.

Still holding on to that election grudge I see. Get over it.

After they shot the suspect, Phil finally showed up.

Why do you say that? I have seen a news report where he was listed as being in charge
