A 30 minute sitcom has approx 20 minutes of show time. An hour long show has 45 minutes of show time. This is proven if you go to Netflix or any other streaming service and check the watch times of tv episodes. So your "observations" about commercials is completely wrong.

What's incorrect in my observations ?

There's not. A simple look at programming times prove your observations incorrect

It seems there are more ads on TV than actual programming, and newspapers are full of ads. The ads on here are very small in comparison .

I honestly hate them, I'm just running out of ideas on what to do. It takes a fair amount of money to run GoNC, and even though we have more traffic than ever we're barely covering everything! Being forced to take the ads off of the personals and guns, then losing the square ad in the lower right (which was worth about twice as much as the long one that's at the bottom now)... it's just hit after hit after hit.

The better solution would be to find a dedicated salesman to get out there and sell ads to local businesses. They would benefit the most, and that would cover the lost revenue from Google. But there's just not enough time in the day to do everything myself I've had 2 people recently tell me that they want to do ad sales and seemed super excited... but then they both disappeared without a word

Do we just need to click on the ads to help out the site or do more than that?

That's a complicated one to answer.

Clicking on the ads definitely helps, for sure, but only if you're actually interested in the product. Clicking on random ads that don't actually interest you helps short-term, but in the long run it just causes the company to bid less. They're paying for ads to pick up new customers, of course, so if you're not interested in them then clicking the ad just costs them money for nothing. And that's really not cool at all, I want it to be a good thing for everyone involved.

But the more you click on ads that actually interest you, the more companies will bid to advertise on the site. And that helps a lot.

Why have an ad pop up in the middle of the page?

Mssassy, we don't have any pop-up ads, and there aren't any in the middle of the page You might have a virus or spyware infection, and that's causing a pop-up that's totally unrelated to us.

Do you mind sending me a screenshot of what you're seeing?

I would prefer the ads be placed on top of threads started by people who disagree with me.

They know who they are.

I hate the ads and I do not click on them. They waste my time trying to get around them.

I realize you sometimes have to rake back the leaves to find fishing worms, and there is no promise of worms.

If you are just rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic, do not set them in front of the food bar.
As your children grow up and leave you can trade the old station wagon for a small compact car. I know some of this seems negative so it will probably get cut by the moderator but if it helps it is worth it.

Just letting everyone know, I'm trying something a little new right now as a test run.

You'll see a new rectangular banner at the top of the page. If it's not too intrusive and has enough of a return, I might leave it and remove one of the square ones that are on the right (of desktop users only).

The sticky banner at the bottom is worth about half as much as the square one used to be, so I'm still scrounging around to find a way to make up for the lost revenue

Sorry for any inconvenience, but please let me know if you have any problems related to the ads, or any other suggestions on improvements!

I'm not sure why the personals are popular; there haven't been any new listings since Bruce Jenner was "SWM seeking SWF".

Umm, we have like 50 posts /day in the personals

Maybe this would be a good time to re-arrange and update the page a bit. This is the only site on the internet that looks the same as it did 15 years ago. Seems to be some impetus, given the ad predicament. The more cluttered a page, the less likely I am to visit it, honestly.

You're preaching to the choir, my friend! I built this design in 2013 (not quite 15 years, but it feels like it!), and started rebuilding 2, maybe 3 years ago. But there's just not enough time in the day to do everything! I get about 1,000 emails and PMs each day, I take care of the web design and hosting clients, and it's on me to do the ad sales. I MIGHT get a few hours each week to work on the new design, so it's taking forever.

I have the new homepage and classifieds finished and ready to go, and the new Private Messages are about half finished. Once I get the Community Voice finished I'll put it up for beta testing, but God only knows how long that will take.

If you have specific ideas on how to make it look less cluttered, though, I'm all ears. Don't make suggestions for the homepage or classifieds, though; they're done, and if I go back and start over then I'll NEVER get finished!

This position is actually less obnoxious on mobile devices than the lower right corner ad

It really don't bother me I can scroll the page up and the banner will always stay at the bottom and I kinda like to read what it says it might be helpful in the long run

Question why do people look at these evil guns. And is traffic really that high looking at guns.
Amazing 70 % of the posters here thinks there is no room in the world for these type of things.

But on the subject. I will say thank you for not folding to google.

And just where did you gather your facts? You liberals seem to be so beat down that you now think you are a majority in hiding on GW.

From July 20-26, 23,105 unique visitors went to this page:

That doesn't include GoAshe or when they look at the ad itself, that's just the number of unique visitors looking at the category.

It's the 4th most popular section on GoWilkes. And the Personals are the 6th most popular, with 15,314 unique visitors in the last week (just looking at GoWilkes, not GoAshe). So removing ads from both was a HUGE hit to our revenue

Jason here is an idea move the temperature and forecast from the top of the page and put it somewhere else. Then put the adds in the blank space that was created next to goashe.com

That's definitely something to consider. On desktop there's just barely enough room for the logo and a banner, so I'd have to move both the temperature and the login section. I could do another row above the navigation to log in, though, and then just move the weather to the right column.

Lemme think on that one... I don't think it's as attractive, but if it's functional and less intrusive then it might be worth doing.
