Tax payer money going to unnamed company

Isn't there a brewery already operating in Lansing?

Timmy, the article says “a local company” suggesting it’s an existing business already in the county. So unless the existing brewery is opening another location, I doubt it’s a brewery.

I like clods idea. Seems to be the up and coming thing among the snowflakes and younger generation.

I believe taxpayers have the right to know what their money is spent on and who it is going to. It is irresponsible to send money for a project when you don't know who is getting the money.

Abstaining in NC does nothing, it still counts as a yes vote legally, as does Rose not showing up. I'd rather you be hot or cold, but if your on the fence you are pretty much worthless, means you are to afraid to make a real vote.....

Could it be the new business is possibly a brewery?

Fins, a former mouthy commissioner in Wilkes blew the counties chance of getting a mid eight digit investment and quite a few jobs by running their mouth. They released confidential information

If the law is that the name can’t be released, then the commissioners can’t release it, not matter how they feel about openness.

Questions remain
If it is Life store how is that creating new jobs for Ashe County and how it would be 10 jobs? If Life Store is replacing their bank that burnt down in Warrensville those jobs already existed and the Warrensville branch only employed a couple employees.

This grant is different than the GE grant Rhodes quoted on before because this grant involves refurbishing a previous used building like the Blevins Building Supply / Superior Pontiac project so different rules apply.
The good side of these type grants is a empty building may be put to use and potentially new jobs may be established. The bad side is state and county funds may be used to open a business that competes with established tax paying businesses that are currently here. Those established businesses do not get the same tax help and potentially lay off employees due to competition therefor no net gain in employees for Ashe. Also creation of new jobs is nonspecific and hard to measure. Full time or part time jobs? Pay? Benefits? How long will employees continue working? Until grants are rewarded or forever?

I don't know the Rules about releasing the name of the business Barr is referring to but smells fishy. Barr already knows the name and Rhodes said others in the room know. Why are the individuals who know privileged to information that commissioners and the general public are not. Somebody needs to do a PIA request. According to Barr if word gets out the expanding business losses grant does not make sense. Why would a business be penalized because of release of public information?

As for the environmentally friendly part, more than likely there is no reason to worry about it but the commissioners seem to worry a bunch about asphalt plants so they should always ask the question when supporting any business with tax dollars.

Maybe our new commissioners who ran stating they believe in public information and open meetings will live up to what they said. If so we should know all answers to these and many other questions in a couple weeks. My guess is we probably will not.

Skyline bank opened a branch in West Jefferson and I bet they didn't get a grant.

Didn’t they have insurance? I mean they sell all types, surely they bought their own fire policy for their buildings. Screw them if they can’t afford their own renovations.

Wasn't it reported publicly that lifestore was considering the old First Citizens bank building in Lansing?

I have heard several people say they think the business is the life store bank. If that is true I have a real problem with a Bank getting tax payer money in the form of grants

Surprised I remembered that at all. I went on vacation and drank a lot that month

Ok I finally found it. The one Fins remembers was called Project Creekside. It was back in August of 2017 and was for a company expansion in West Jefferson creating 31 jobs. Although the company is not named it does say products and services include power generation, aircraft engines and medical imaging, so it's not too hard to guess who it is.

And yes Fins, Rhodes did voice the same concerns of giving the money without knowing the name of the company and he abstained from voting then too.

The antiques place is in the old Roses building.

Names of companies have always been secret. It was just that McMillan and Mitchell always told Rhodes confidential information that other commissioners weren’t privileged too. New manager and economic director must not treating him special.

The old Lowes food is already operating as a business. Its another place like antiques on main. You rent a space or pay a percentage of sales.

what the ???

The other was about renovating the old Lowe’s Foods building.

Did they just recycle the same article then? Because Rhodes made the exact same statement in that one. I’ll admit the bourbon makes some details fuzzy, but not that bad.

Joe, if I could remember it, I’d PM you. Maybe OleJoe can help us out since he seems to be recalling it better than me.
