Handing not hanging...... It gets worse as it goes.

Apparently my English teachers should have never gotten a raise. Geez, Their not there.

Heels09

Posted 9:46 am, 05/22/2015

Im sure it wasn't, that doesn't mean they should lay down and not fight for higher pay. It's their right, just like it is for everyone else. You don't like it because you are the one paying for it, I get it. You don't like the rhetoric from teachers, I get that as well.

Again, there voice is loud because they have a strong lobbying group.

If we want to fix the problem, we actually address the problem. Not all teachers are equal. Their pay should be a performance base pay. Incentives to increase pay rather than just hanging out raises.

Was the salary kept a secret from them before they decided to get a teaching degree or take the actual job?

Heels09

I don't know about anyone else, I worked hard to to get my degrees so that I could have a "lazy" job. No its not teaching, yet I have taught some. I'm glad I don't have to teach everyday. I'm a very happy that my ceiling in much higher than 50k per year.

No, most people have been brainwashed by the constant whining by teachers. Teachers teach because they can't handle real jobs

Heels09

You can have that opinion. That's fine. However, most people know that that's not true and we we continue to support our wonderful teachers in Ashe County. A great teach can not be replaced. They may easily fill the position, but they can't be replaced.

They are lazy, the job isn't that hard, and they are paid what they are worth based on how easy they are to replace

Again, post the salaries. It's public record. If the Post has a point and can actually write a meaningful article, by all means post them. However, without any context at all, it's lazy journalism.

We don't judge a person's worth by their salary. If a teacher prepares their students and they succeed, you can't put a price on that. I don't give a **** if it's tax money or not. Teachers have fought for higher pay because that's what we all do. How many people turn down raises, or get mad when others get raises and we don't. The difference is they have an organization that fights for their benefits. Their voices are loud. They are not lazy, probably work harder than everyone on here. They show love and compassion when no one else does to some of these kids.

The reason that we continue to fall behind in education is this very reason. We can't sit down and actually fix the problems, we have to fight each other. I don't fall for the traps that most of you like to set to stir up debate. However the defamation of an entire profession is wrong. Really, we are bashing a professional group that the ceiling is 50k with a BS degree and 61k max. By your comments I would have thought they made 250k per year.

Boo boo, they have to take work home. So do I. People in real jobs regularly do 10 to 12 hours a day and don't get 2 weeks at Christmas, spring break, and summers off. No one hid the details of the job from them when they signed up. For 13 years they listened to their own teachers whine and moan about grading papers, going to meetings, and being under paid, and they still signed up for the job. Either shut up or quit.

Just got an email that we're (state employees) getting a 2% salary increase in July

Has anybody sat down in a classroom lately? I would not want to teach if it paid twice what it does. Maybe kindergarten or early grades but middle school on up should pay active battle pay. I'm not saying they don't make enough but given what they have to put up with, who would want it. My ex-eife was a teacher. Not a good teacher at that. They may teach 6 hours a day. That does not count for the other 3 to 4 hours a day grading papers and the rest of the stuff they do. Let's just say there is no time for anybody else left. She's still single and my current wife sure is not a teacher.

The big deal Sammy is they would be exposed as cry baby liars like we have said all along. Like you said all can be proven online now. I want the post to reconsider publishing names and salary from top to bottom.

What's the big deal about having a state supported salary published? I am a state employee and anyone can look up my salary or any state employee salary online.

The county's median income is 35,951. The only teachers making less than the median income in the county are ones who have 2 years or less experience. The majority of the county's teachers are making in the mid 40ks.

Teaching is probably one of the better paying jobs in the county currently. Would you make more in Houston, TX. Yes you would make more, but your cost of living will be higher and I guarantee the bureaucracy that you have to deal with will be far more bloated, so there are trade offs.

I can understand why teacher's don't want their salaries published, because they in general are making more money than over half the county on average. Still the are public employees and should be answerable to the public. My Uncle taught for years in the county and retired, he makes a very paltry pension. He is angry over how much some teachers are paid today and feel that it is unfair. I guess he wishes he'd been paid as well as they are now when he was teaching.

They come up with every excuse under the sun trying to convince the public how under paid and over worked they are. Yet when our very own newspaper wants to help by publishing their salaries world war 3 breaks out. The poor paper was only trying to bring to light the teachers so-called low salaries. Where do they rank now nationwide? 57th?

Basking

Clearly teachers don't really think they are under paid or they would want the people to know what they make so more people would fight for them to get raises.
