Fins, I assume you're talking about Andrew Johnson, not Jackson. Jackson was president about 30 years before the Civil War. Also, Johnson was never elected president, as he assumed the position after the Lincoln assassination and wasn't chosen by the Democrats to run for re-election after his term. Hankey, I've always thought it kind of curious that a Tennessee democrat was able to get elected right after the war. Part of the problem was before Jackson got in, the Union confiscated land from plantation owners and gave it to the slaves that worked the farms. The intention is obvious, but redistribution if wealth only causes more tension, which fueled Jackson's policies.

Another interesting bit that should be considered, blacks were slaves for 250 years in America. They have only been free, roughly 150 years. And it's only been illegal to not discriminate against them for about 50 years.
