Time to support education instead of sports

Dog, that's all important subjects. They should be addressed and are being addressed What I am saying is that sports will always be in the education equation. There is too much money for Corporate America to lose if sports were removed from the equation. Look at the extravagant football stadiums that are being built on High School campuses in Texas, Calif., and Florida. ESPN even televises high school football and basketball games. It just won't happen.

You dont think head injuries are worth talking about? The grade of equipment used? The new rules for CPR and first responders at practice?

Because it is still the same old drum beating. Like it or not, sports are here to stay. Press on to something else worth talking about.

Did they finally realize they were wrong and an education was more important?

Where are all the athletic supporter who used to show up and defend these children's games by making them seem to be more important than actually learning something worthwhile in schools? They used to drag their knuckles across their keyboards at every chance they had to stress the importance of throwing a ball or catching a ball

Dump Common Core and No Child Left Behind, in fact dump the United States Dept. of Education, since it was made a Department in 1979 we've been sliding and I agree school is not preparing young people for the work force as it should be. They have no idea of how to show up on time, how to do basic math, etc.

I don't know Dog, I haven't heard anything new on the lawsuit. I would say he stands a good chance of winning though. His accident certainly made the schools and the coaches in NC pay more attention to mat placement and adhering to national standards.

Farmer did the kid and his family ever settle or go to court with the pending lawsuit they had?

I agree. While sports are important in helping create character, when it gets to the point where kids are injured like the high school wrestler in Alleghany County, it's time to rethink the safety aspect.

I studied a month for my urine test, and passed...

On a fairly regular basis, I have occasion to interview potential candidates for medium skilled electronic techs, mechanics and other semi professionals. Many young candidates are among them. It totally amazes me to see how unprepared for the real world these idiots are. I have had A and B students who could not do simple math or use a computer for anything other than access social media sites. Proficient use of spreadsheets was not even in their training.

Sadly, these young adults will be leading this county and nation in a couple of decades. Pitiful.

And the dumbest stunt I see pulled is showing up for a job interview, full well knowing in advance that a urinalysis was forthcoming, but still fail the test. Duh?!

Back in the day when I was lets just say carrying out cheerleaders I was very mindful of head injuries. I had them put on a helmet in bed because of those oak head boards. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

Most now haven't idea what the 3 R's are.

More classes are needed in the fundamentals in RRandR than the "fundamentals of baseball"...

In just the past 18 hours, another sports related head injury has made headlines. Miami Hurricanes starting center will be benched for the NIT final game due to a concussion.

Protect your kids from sports

I agree with the injury argument to cut sports. Also, our kids can't do basic math or compose a REAL letter. Sports seem to be much more for the parents than the kids. Get out of the gym and back into the library.

Mr. underdog, you are correct. It took a mega corporation like NASCAR losing a super star before they did anything. What will it take the NCHAA to get their attention before they decide that students are worth more than dollar signs? Other school athletic associations are already being forced to look at what is life worth versus Friday night incomes.

Nascar went through a multitude of changes when Earnhardt was killed. The helmets were all changed and mandated to be full face and meet nascar specifications. They also instituted the Hans device to further stave off head injuries.

Yet our children are considered less important than a race car driver. They all wear a helmet likely a cheapo and who has even looked to see if they are even wearing a minimum helmet?

From what I've found, it's safe to bet that most schools, especially in our area, use the cheapest helmets they can get by with.

The first thing I took from the study by Wake, VT, and State was the fact that there are minimum standards set for high school helmets. It also pointed out that there are foot ball helmets that are rated well above the minimum. Which helmet does Ashe county use the cheapo or the more expensive safer helmet?
