No, Hog Elk is an insulting name that was given to that surrounding community. Turtle Island is name of Conway's camp.

Nonprofit doesnt mean what you think it does. Private country clubs are also nonprofit corps.

Looks like they charge about $100 a day per person. Turtle Island Preserve wasn't incorporated until 2008, any idea what it was called prior to that?

Non-profit, Have you been on his web site for turtle island and seen what he charges these adults and kids to learn about nature. Non-Profit my butt. His "interns" pay him to work there.

Btw chick, to anawer your question, I have absolutely no desire to live off the grid. I like electricity, running hot and cold water (especially the hot), TV, Internet, center all heat, clean clothes, and bathing regularly. Off the grid means women with hairy legs. I'll pass

His hippie raciest supporters lost site of the fact he is running a business whether for profit or not fins is right his costumers would expect to be safe there. Let one of those buildings fall and I bet he has not one dime of insurance. Thats one reason the county shut him down because they would be libel also.

After seeing the photos of his place, I don't know if those buildings are considered improvements or not. But being there is one building listed on the records, the tax office should drive by every few years and see what's new. But they were probably too busy hanging out at the coffee shop instead of doing their job.
As for water, most springs have a bacteria in them. I can't remember now which bacteria. Those of us from around here aren't harmed by it, but for others traveling to visit his camp could get sick from it. And you all seem to forget that he is running a business and profiting off of this hippie village. And when you start doing that you have responsibilities to protect your customers

I still fault the tax department of watauga county for not taxing the buildings for 26 years. Obviously they had one down for him and never went back. NC has aerial photos that all counties use that you can see a fly on a light pole they are so good there is no excuse for anyone missing this.
Off the grid kept any utilities off the property also.

Dog, I don't know about the drinking water...I would assume there are several springs on a tract that large but his electricity is water powered. He's built a pretty good system using the stream that runs through his property.
I'd love to go see his setup and what all he's doing. Wouldn't hurt for more people to have the same self-sustainable knowledge that he has. Who wouldn't want to fall off the grid if they could? Obviously, bringing people in creates an issue of safety but if he would have kept to living on and preserving that land on his own I doubt anyone would have noticed.

Notice the dilapidated buildings in the picture and the rusted tin roof on one. They look well built and sound to run a camp in and take a crap in a hole in the ground.
I didnt see water or electricity mentioned does he have safe drinking water?

It's starting to look more and more like eustace is a paranoid nut. I just ran across this site, with a letter from. He honestly thinks the local county government is on some conspiracy to shut him down because his land is worth more to developers.
http://www.theresilientfami...-a-threat/
Don't forget to read the comments from his fellow nut jobs and racists at the bottom. They think the government is trying to stop him from teaching people how to survive on the land. I guess this is to prevent a revolution or something. And don't miss the bigoted comments towards Indians (from india). But my favorite is when one idiot comments on the local government workers and their manicures. I laughed out loud for that one. I know the Joe Furman and the others in the watauga planning and inspections departments and none of them have ever had a manicure. I love stupid people.

Fins as cooper said it was speeded up but your right about the pan that was funny. I mean pans are ment to be pushed by dozers so why would one think it would be able to stop a dozer. I have watch all the videos I can find about this and listen to his tape recordings and people who know him. From what I have heard it sounds like he was fed up with the town playing games and costing him his buisness when he felt like he wsa pushed to the limit he push back.
The only people who seem to have anything bad to say about him are the people who were trying to screw him over. There are several people who said the he was a good guy and would give you the shirt off his back.

It is been speeded up. The reporter says they are going to speed it up a the 34 sec mark. I can't figure out how his friends or family didn't see him welding this and say something.

Is it just me, or does that dozer look to be moving faster than normal? Wonder if its just the video or if he rebuilt the whole thing to speed it up. I would love to know though what idiot thought it would work to stop a dozer that size with a pan.
