We said it here before and the usual naysayers said we were just negative about everything. How can anyone honestly be positive about how things were being run by the Mouth Breathers. They could easily trim 10% of each budget. Easily. I can't fault the employee pay increase though. So, sooner or later a tax increase must come. And it needs to be here sooner. Any politician saying otherwise is only telling people what they want to hear. Very unrealistic approach. Cut the waste, cut the services. Still will need a tax increase.

They also continued to hand out raises to county employees. So while they already didn't have enough income to cover the budget, they upped the county's payroll.
So now they need to give the hospital an extra $500k, make up the $700k lost in revenue from housing Wilkes county prisoners, fill in the $500k that's already been short, and replenish the fund balance they have been robbing.
And they told the people that that sales tax would keep them from having to raise the property tax rate. Either the commissioners are liars, or completely stupid

Cynic, it's bigger than just that. The commissioners have already been running a deficit for several years now because they refused to raise property taxes or cut services. So they have made up the difference by robbing the fund balance. I believe it's been around a half a million each year. They also continued to hand out raises to county em

I didn't really think about that, Backwater. Is the county still paying a mortgage on their jail? If so, that loss of income might really a bigger impact than I originally thought.

Ashe will need more $ now that Wilkes has a new jail.Wilkes claimed they spent $700,000.00 per year in Ashe to house prisoners.

I won't dispute the fact that could actually happen here as well. With small town Gov't nothing surprises me...

It doesn't make a bit of difference. They did this in Wilkes a few years ago, too. Everyone voted it down, but the commissioners did it anyway during the next non-election year.
They had great plans on where that money was going to go, which lasted for about a year. After that, they just do whatever they want with it.
